10 ‘Hot Topic’ Indian Web Series Set to Make a Return in 2019
2018 has been a great year on the digital space. The past twelve months have witnessed a monumental rise in the migration of the Indian audiences, especially the youth, towards the web. Every OTT platform, both Indian and International, upped the ante.
The next year promises a further expansion of online entertainment and will also bring back some of the popular web series with a second season. Here are some of the ‘hot topic’ web series that are set to make a comeback in 2019:
#1 – Sacred Games Season 2
Netflix’s first Indian original web series, that not only became one of the most popular web series of the year, but also brought Netflix to the higher levels of competition, will return with a Season 2 in 2019. In fact, the shoot is currently ongoing and we just can’t wait any longer to find out what the second season has in store for us!
#2 – Mirzapur Season 2
Amazon Prime Video’s well-received intense thriller crime drama web series, Mirzapur, with its heart-winning cast, ended on a (mini-spoiler!) sad note. Makers of the Mirzapur have confirmed the second season of the gun and gangster-filled series. We’re definitely looking forward to some female badassery in Mirzapur.
#3 – Breathe Season 2
With an intense cat and mouse setup between a serial killer with a motive to save his son’s life and a police officer with vague morals, Amazon Prime’s Breathe became a heavily binged-watched show on the platform. The excitement and thrill will be back with a second season, and will feature actor Abhishek Bachchan in a major role.
#4 – Side Hero Season 2
Eros Now’s first Indian original (fiction) web series, Side Hero, will also be returning for yet another season of crazy and comedy. This satirical on Bollywood Film Industry took us on a hilarious adventure of a young man’s quest to becoming a ‘main hero’ in the film.
#5 – Love, Lust and Confusion Season 2
Viu India’s Original web series Love, Lust and Confusion, provided an insight into the lives of the modern generation, their confusions and dilemmas, as well as their love life, also touching upon topics like polyamory (gasp!). Viu India recently announced the return of this relatable and engaging web series for a season 2.
#6 – Comicstaan Season 2
Amazon Prime renewed Comicstaan for a second season, even before the first season came to an end. The reality stand-up comedy hunt show, judged by the bigwigs of Indian stand-up comedy, became one of the most watched shows on the platform. The ‘sakht launda’ Zakir Khan will be joining the show for a second season.
#7 – Gandii Baat Season 2
ALTBalaji’s Gandii Baat caught the eyes of the people for its bold content and bizarre concept. Set in rural India, the erotic web series explored fantasies of both men and women. It was recently announced that Gandii Baat would be returning for another season. How far do you think the show will go this time?
#8 – Damaged Season 2
Hungama’s Damaged ventured into the psychological thriller territory when not many dared to. Damaged took a dive into a dark mysterious world where a ruthless police officer and heartless killer collide with each other. The second season of Damaged is expected to feature a different cast and have a higher thrill quotient.
#9 – Tripling Season 2
Tripling by The Viral Fever (TVF) is a tale of three siblings who leave their lives and go on an impromptu road trip together. On their journey, they face troubles, and reflect on their lives. The heart-warming web series is making a comeback for the second season and has already begun its shoot with the same trio in the lead.
#10 – Inside Edge Season 2
Amazon Prime’s first Indian original web series, Inside Edge, ventured into the dirty world of our country’s beloved sport, cricket. It delved into the scene behind the sport – peeking into the politics, the power play, the sex, the money, the conflict, and the selfish motives. The gripping web series will return on Amazon Prime Video for a new intense season next year.
The Year Ahead:
Not just these, several new shows will also be hitting your mobile screens – ALTBalaji’s The Verdict and Cartel, Eros Now’s Flesh, Netflix’s Leila, Amazon Prime’s The Family Man, SonyLIV’s Heartbreak Hotel, to name a few.
2019 will be another fantastic year for the web entertainment industry, as well as its various audiences. Are you excited for the year ahead? We sure are!
