The previous decade marked the emergence and rise of web entertainment, and 2019 was quite a successful wrap-up to it. Now, 2020 is set to be packed with lots of amazing shows as well. So, here are the top 4 most anticipated web series coming out this year.

The 2010s was the decade that brought to us the world of Web Entertainment. The new phenomena that began on YouTube finally became mainstream with the emergence of OTT streaming platforms, with India adopting the global binge-watch craze rather quickly. Web Series have become a popular form of entertainment over the past few years, and the hype around shows like Sacred Games, Mirzapur, and the like, was something India had never seen before. Even with 2020, what is being called the ‘Golden Age of Web Entertainment’ will only continue. The competition is, in fact, going to become more intense.

After a successful 2019, streaming platforms are working for an even better next, and 2020 is set to be packed with tons of amazing content – from much-awaited returns of our favorite shows to some new originals with mind-blowing concepts. We’ve compiled a small list of shows that you definitely need to watch out for this year. Here are our top 4 most anticipated web series coming out in 2020:

  1. Mirzapur Season 2:

Amazon Prime Video India’s crime-thriller, Mirzapur, which starred names like Ali Fazal, Shweta Tripathi, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Vikrant Massey, Pankaj Tripathi, Divyendu and Rasika Dugal, quickly became one of the most popular shows amongst the audiences in India. The first season followed two brothers, Guddu and Bablu, their confrontation with criminals and subsequent entry into the world of crime, leading to a power-play brimming with violence.

With a bloody end to the first season, fans eagerly awaited the show’s return. The wait is finally coming to an end. Mirzapur Season 2 is returning with vengeance, even bloodier than before, and will pick up the story from where it left off. The second season is expected to premiere in April 2020. It’ll be interesting to see how the story moves forward.

  1. The Family Man Season 2:

The Family Man is yet another Amazon Prime Video India offering. This riveting thriller-drama can be considered as one of the best web series from 2019. Starring Manoj Bajpayee as the lead, the series revolves around the life of Srikant Tiwari, an intelligence officer trying to strike a balance between fulfilling his family duties and his highly demanding job of protecting the country from danger.

The first season was sensational and ended on a terrific cliffhanger, leaving us wanting more. The Family Man Season 2, for which the shoot is already underway, is said to be bigger and better than before and will feature the award-winning South Indian actress Samantha Akkineni in a negative role. The new season is expected to come out later this year.

  1. Mentalhood:

Mentalhood, an ALTBalaji creation, will mark popular Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor’s digital debut. Alongside Kapoor, the new original will be also featuring an ensemble cast, inclusive of talented actors such as Shilpa Shukla, Tillotama Shome, Sandhya Mridul, Shruti Seth, Dino Morea, and Sanjay Suri, among others. Long in the making, the show was earlier slated to premiere last year, but constant delays have been pushing its release date further and further.

The series will revolve around the lives of different mothers and how they navigate through unreasonable expectations, manage habitual multitasking, worry about everything, deal with guilt, and try their best to raise their children well by giving them a good upbringing against all odds. Karisma Kapoor will play one such mother, with Sanjay Suri as her husband. Mentalhood is finally expected to hit the screens in 2020.

  1. Baahubali: Before the Beginning:

The films from the Baahubali franchise, namely Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, managed to take the country and the world by storm upon release, cementing their names amongst the highest-grossing films in India so far. Set as a prequel to the two films, Baahubali: Before the Beginning will be Netflix’s contribution to the franchise, produced by S.S. Rajamouli himself.

The series is based on Anand Neelakantan’s novel, The Rise of Sivagami, and will chronicle Sivagami’s rise to power as the brave queen of Mahishmati, following her journey from her defiant years as a princess to her queenship. The series will feature Mrunal Thakur as Sivagami, and actors such as Rahul Bose, Atul Kulkarni, Smaran Sahu, Sunil Palwal, Siddharth Arora, Vaquar Shaikh, Jameel Khan, and Anup Soni, in important roles. The series is expected to come out later this year.
