ALTbalaji’s The Great Indian Dysfunctional Family focuses on the crazy family of Ranauts with their deep-seated issues and twists. The story starts with Samar (Barun Sobti) and his wife Sonali (Eisha Chopra) returning to Coonoor, Samar’s home, after 8 years. The drama unveils rapidly when he arrives home, where there’s bad blood between him and his brother Vikram (Kay Kay Menon). One life-altering secret after another, the 10-episode journey through this dysfunctional family makes us realize that despite all the skeletons in the closet, and the bittersweet moments, in the end family is all that matters.

  • In the pilot episode itself, all the characters are outlined in a detailed manner, establishing a strong plot.
  • All the actors outplay their characters extraordinarily, especially Kay Kay Menon, leaving you baffled yet awed.
  • The never-ending twists in every episode keep the viewers on their toes and glued to the screen.
  • The appropriate and perfect use of humor and music where necessary heightens the watching experience.
  • It aptly captures both the ugly and beautiful aspects of a family, breaking the usual soap-opera family stereotypes and avoids being too dramatic.

Apart from the rapid-fire unveiling of secrets, which can be quite overwhelming at times, the series is a must watch for a break from usual saas-bahu family drama.

Bottom Line:

The Great Indian Dysfunctional Family is a nice break from the run-of-the-mill, sappy family drama; more of a reality check that makes you snap your fingers and say, “That’s how real families are!”

  • The series marks Kay Kay Menon’s debut into the digital entertainment.
  • Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi fame Swaroop Sampat makes a comeback through this series, who is also known for teaching acting to disabled children.
